Rowenta DW4060 Review : Auto Steam Iron

The Rowenta DW4060 is probably a step up from the DW2070 Effective Comfort iron with its more expensive selling price. But it is still reasonably priced and retails for far less than those $120 irons. There are unique features to it that makes it slightly different from other models, so let’s check it out in this review.

rowenta dw4060 auto steam iron soleplateThe soleplate for this Rowenta Auto Steam iron does not have 400 micro steam holes like the Rowenta DW5080 does but it is still a highly polished airglide stainless steel soleplate with a curved bottom. It also has nonstick and scratch-resistant properties. The steam vents are fairly large covering the edges of the soleplate with smaller vents seen on the tip. Combined with the precision tip and 1700-watt of power, it easily gets rid of wrinkles from the more difficult-to-reach areas.

The other unique feature is the auto steam capability. There is a lever at the front of the iron which allows you to select the setting for the steam output. You can choose Dry for dry ironing and Auto Steam for automatic adjustment of the steam volume to match the selected temperature setting. This means there is no Low to High steam settings for you to fiddle with as the iron will adjust its steam output accordingly for different kind of fabrics. You just need to choose the temperature or fabric settings via a thermostat dial below the handle and the auto steam function will take care of the steam output on its own.

You can use tap water with the Rowenta DW4060 and it has a tank capacity of about 9.5 ounces. The integrated ant-scale and self-cleaning systems will help to maintain the performance of the iron. The unit also has a 3-way auto shut-off with a 8-minite time window when left idle on its heel. The heel also has a soft touch layer for extra stability.

Should You Buy The Rowenta Auto Steam Iron?

Pros

  1. Much more affordable – The iron is not too expensive at the time of this review. It sells for less than $60 and for a 1700-watt model, it is reasonably priced. Compared to the Rowenta DW5197 Focus that sells for about $100, you can pay much less and still get a nicely designed steam iron.
  2. Acceptable performance – The majority of buyers are happy with the performance of the iron for the price that they paid. It is not the best steam iron but it has adequate steam volume and heat output with a smooth soleplate to make the chore a little easier.
  3. Simple and straightforward – The iron has an auto steam function that automatically regulates the steam output for you based on the fabric setting that you have chosen. Overall, it is intuitive and easy to use.

Cons

  1. Made in China – Some customers have complained that the iron is not made in Germany as what they thought it would be. Instead, it is made in China and thus, they are wary about its quality control and durability.
  2. Water level difficult to see – The tank is not clear enough to make it easy to see the water line. For this, irons such as the Panasonic NI-W810CS are much better designed with see-through plastic that you can easily check how much water is left in the tank.
  3. Spits – A few reviewers have encountered this problem with their iron. It leaks and spits water onto their clothes but then again, it is a typical complaint of many steam irons, regardless of the brand.

The Rowenta DW4060 Auto Steam iron is not the one to buy if you are looking for a unit with an abundance of steam to take care of a big load of laundry. For that, the top end Rowenta irons like the DW9080 Steamium or even the DG8430 Pro Precision Steam Station will be a better buy. For about $60, this iron caters more for people with a small to medium ironing load and do not mind taking a little more time to get the wrinkles to melt away on thicker materials.

For that and the price, we recommend a buy for the Rowenta DW4060. Not everyone is comfortable taking a risk with anything more expensive for a steam iron and as such, we feel that this model is at the right price point for all the needed features in an iron.
