hamilton beach ironWith a nonstick soleplate, the Hamilton Beach 14210R also comes with a steam blast and fine spray mist to get rid of tough wrinkles. There are 6 settings on the temperature dial which is below the handle – nylon/acrylic, silk, polyester, wool, rayon and cotton/linen. The steam range is from the wool setting onwards. Use the adjustable steam lever to control the amount of steam output on different fabrics.

You will have to allow 2 minutes for the iron to reach the desired temperature. For vertical steaming, you will have to allow at least 2 seconds after one blast of steam. You can also use the steam blast button to clean the vents and flush out any deposits. You can use ordinary tap water with the Hamilton Beach 14210R. Unless you have extremely hard water in your area, then only you will need to alternate between tap and distilled water when refilling.

Once the unit is plugged in, the indicator light will come on. After an hour, the auto shut-off will kick in and you can push the reset button to restart the iron. If you are a quilter and want an iron with no auto shut-off, the Rowenta DW5197 is another option. The 14210R iron also comes with a retractable cord for easy storage.

Should You Buy The Hamilton Beach Iron 14210R?

  1. Highly affordable – This Hamilton Beach iron is highly affordable as we have see it being sold for around $18 at one point. But even at its usual selling price, you can get it for less than $40.
  2. Retractable cord – It is hard to find a lower end iron with a retractable cord. The 14210R is one of the few that has this feature and for some people, having a retractable cord is a big plus when it comes to storage. Another iron with has retractable cord is the Panasonic NI-E650TR which usually retails for less than $30 and which we think qualifies as one of the best irons under $50.
  3. Gets the job done – It is enough to get the job done for those who are not too fussy with the results. The iron is lightweight, weighing 2.7 lbs, but it has just enough heat and steam for basic jobs.

  1. Sputters – Complaints from customers of the iron sputtering and spitting are pretty common for this model. There are instances of black and brown stains on clothing due to spits from the unit.

Overall, we don’t think you should get the Hamilton Beach 14210R nonstick iron if you are a heavy user. There are just too many complaints from buyers that the risk of spitting and breaking down is quite high. The only upside is that it is cheap while on sale and if you can get it for less than $20, then maybe it might be worth the risk. Otherwise, you would be better off spending your money elsewhere. If it is selling at close to its list price of $40, the Hamilton Beach Durathon digital iron would be a more worthwhile buy than the 14210R.

Also, if you don’t really care for a retractable cord, then your options are many. For example, the Black & Decker F67E Classic is only selling for slightly above $20 and it is a┬áheavier iron. It is similar to the Hamilton Beach Retro for those who like the old school feeling.
